North Fair Oaks Community Council

In June of 1987, the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, as part of the Community Development Block Grant Program, authorized the development of a special committee to study the Economic Strategies in North Fair Oaks. Two task forces were formed to develop a number of action-oriented strategies that could be implemented within 1-2 years. In February of 1988, the Board of Supervisors accepted the committee's final report and acted on the recommendation to form a permanent entity to develop long-term economic strategies by active partnerships among community members and the private sector. Resolution #54597, passed on December 11, 1990, established a Municipal Advisory Council for the unincorporated North Fair Oaks Community. That council is now known as the North Fair Oaks Community Council. The Council's initial resolution #63547 was revised in 2002 and again on February 10, 2009 through resolution #039914.

The North Fair Oaks Community Council provides recommendations on the issues of community health, safety, welfare, public works and planning for the North Fair Oaks geographic area. It holds regular monthly meetings to address the needs of the community, act as a forum, and serve as an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors. The Council has nine members and one non-voting youth member. All members must be residents or business owners in the North Fair Oaks area. Council members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for three-year terms with a maximum of 12 years. Regular meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month at the Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City from 7-9 p.m. Meetings are publicly noticed, comply with the Brown Act, and are televised on PenTV on Monday nights at 10 pm on Comcast Cable Channel 26. Everardo Rodriguez

Everardo Rodriguez has been a resident of North Fair Oaks for nearly 20 years. His education includes an MA in Library & Information Science from San Jose State University. He works as a specialist in Latino/Mexican American collections, and digital initiatives for the Stanford University Libraries. He has a keen interest in promoting a better life for all through volunteering and helps several projects in the Bay Area, including the Green Branch Library (an Oakland-based nonprofit that provides environmental and social justice library materials to children); and Puente-Pescadero (a Stanford School of Education project that provides interpretation and counseling for immigrants during parent-teacher meetings in the rural town of Pescadero, California). He is also an occasional writing contributor for San Francisco’s oldest bilingual newspaper, El Tecolote; and a member of Son de la Bahia—a traditional Mexican music coalition with members from all over the Bay Area who support social and cultural events. As a member of the North Fair Oaks Community Council, Everardo hopes to help his community in sustaining and procuring resources to improve the residents’ quality of life, thus enhancing opportunities for advancement in education, labor, health, housing, and other basic human needs.

Beatriz Cerrillo

Beatriz Cerrillo is a long time resident of North Fair Oaks and has served on the council since 2006. She is the school librarian at Fair Oaks and Garfield Elementary School. Ms. Cerrillo believes in life-long learning, reflected through her BA from Santa Clara University; post graduate credits in the teacher credential program from Notre Dame University; and Library Technician Program certificate from San Francisco City College. She has been a board member of the Girls’ Middle School, a private girls’ school in Palo Alto, for 6 years and participated on the PTA and School Site Councils for the school district. She was recognized by the school board for her 30 years of service and received an award from San Mateo County for coordinating the Mother-Daughter Program at Fair Oaks School. The program, with the assistance of a federal grant, provided guidance and activities for 5th grade Latina girls and their mothers on how to attend college. As a member of the Council, her goal is to affect positive change by encouraging residents to get involved in current projects and serve as a liaison for residents to ensure they have a voice in their local government. Ms. Cerrillo looks forward to a more healthy and vibrant community.

Linda Lopez

Linda Lopez is a longtime community activist/advocate for North Fair Oaks and communities of color. She has formerly worked for the San Mateo County Superior Court and the Service Employee’s International Union, Local 521. Linda serves as a member of the North Fair Oaks Community Council, San Mateo County Housing Community Development Committee, the Executive Board of El Concilio of San Mateo County and the North Fair Oaks Community Plan Implementation Committee.
