At the Redwood City School District Board meeting on June 25th, two charter school petitions were approved for schools that may open in the North Fair Oaks area. KIPP and Rocketship submitted petitions to the School Board to open a K-5 charter school and K-8 charter school for the 2015-2016 school year respectively.

Both KIPP and Rocketship are established charter organizations that operate other schools in the Bay Area. Enrollment is based on an application process with specific criteria. If more students apply than the number of seats, students will be chosen through a random lottery, and students residing in the school district will be given the top priority for admission. KIPP envisions opening a K-8 school that will ultimately serve approximately 925 students by 2020. Rocketship will be a K-5 school that expects to serve 650 students by 2020.
