The Tattoo Removal Program officially reopened on Jan. 31, 2014 and the new laser equipment was the star of the show at the Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL) reception. The Tattoo Removal Program was shuttered two years ago when the (expensive) equipment broke down. Originally begun in 1995, this program has helped more than 2,000 former gang members and victims of domestic violence, from the ages of 9 to 65, escape the markings of their past and begin life anew. The process takes months, courage, and requires a substantial amount of community service from the program participants. The doctors and program leads are all volunteers and deserve our admiration and thanks. At a fateful lunch last summer, a group of local leaders pledged to support the purchase of new equipment. Special thanks to all the funding partners: the Sequoia Healthcare District, City of Redwood City, County of San Mateo, the San Mateo Credit Union, Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL), the Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL), the Peery Foundation, Paula Uccelli, Alpio Barbara, Dr. Janet Madonado, and Steve and Donna Andrighetto.
